Writing Across the Curriculum Program

Founded in 1992 by Dr. Dona J. Hickey, this writing program involves faculty, students, Writing Fellows and program personnel in collaborative "writing as learning'' experiences. The WAC program involves around fifteen instructors, at least twenty Writing Fellows, and nearly four hundred students each semester. Instructors and Fellows work with students in various disciplines and departments.

The WAC program strives to provide students with writing instruction throughout their undergraduate years beyond the first year English composition course. Fellows and faculty work closely to encourage students to practice effective writing skills in all assignments and situations, from lab reports to critical theory. Instructors and Fellows find their own critical skills improve, while students find their writing skills strengthened by working closely with fellows and instructors.

Dr. Joe Essid, current Director of the WAC Program and University Writing Center, works closely with assistant director Lee Carleton, to implement the Writing Fellows program. Advisors include a WAC Committee of faculty members from several academic disciplines, and Dr. Hickey, who directed WAC until 1997. All Writing Fellows and Writing Center Tutors apply to take a prerequisite training course, English 383: Composition Theory and Pedagogy.
