How Students Can Get Involved
We encourage interested students to join the Writing Across the Curriculum program. Becoming a writing consultant is excellent training for graduate school and many professions, especially for rhetoric & communication studies and English majors. Students should be rising sophomores, juniors, or seniors with excellent writing and interpersonal skills. Instructors should be willing to try writing-to-learn activities in their classrooms, willing to make minor changes to their syllabi and assignments to accommodate the use of writing consultants, and committed to improving student writing in all disciplines. Find out more about getting involved by following the links below.
To become involved in Writing Across the Curriculum as a writing consultant or a Writing Center technology assistant, students must complete an application process to request permission to enroll in the training course, English 383: Composition Theory and Pedagogy.
The application process includes the following:
- Contact assistant director Lee Carleton
- Provide a writing sample of at least three pages that illustrates one's best writing
- Request a professor's letter of recommendation
If accepted into the program, students will be given departmental permission to enroll in English 383. Becoming a fully active participant in WAC as a writing consultant is contingent upon successfully completing the required training course and upon personal approval from the instructor of the course.
Students, whether new or returning, are asked to complete the student preference form each semester.
